Former Sun GC Bikes – and Blogs – Cross Country

In legal-blogging circles, Mike Dillon is known as the first Fortune 500 general counsel to launch a blog. That was in 2006, when Dillon was GC of Sun Microsystems. Earlier this year, Oracle acquired Sun. With Sun’s demise, so went Dillon’s blog (although the archives remain up).

With the acquisition over and time on his hands, Dillon decided to do something he’d wanted to do since college: ride a bicycle across the United States. Not surprisingly, given his history, he also decided to document the trip in his personal blog.

I’m a bit late in telling you about this. Dillon completed the trip in May. He reports that he traveled 3,408 miles, climbed the equivalent of three Mt. Everests, had two flat tires and lost 23 pounds.

He also learned a lesson or two about life, he says. The biggest one was not to listen to all the people who raised a litany of fears about why he should not go on the trip. Recounting the people he met and places he saw along the way, he writes, “When we let fear limit us, we miss the best of each other, our country and ourselves. So, my big piece of advice if you are considering a tour (or any other endeavor) – don’t be afraid.”

You can read all his posts documenting the trip, from start to end, at his blog.
