Since joining the global law firm Goodwin Procter as chief operating officer in 2014, Michael R. Caplan has racked up multiple awards for reshaping the firm’s business operations and establishing a new model of working with clients that offers them both legal advice and business-consulting services.

Caplan’s recognitions include having been named 2019 Legal Innovator of the Year in The Changing Lawyer Awards presented by Litera and one of top five law firm legal intrapreneurs in the Financial Times North America 2019 Innovative Lawyer Awards.

In addition, The American Lawyer named Goodwin’s global operations team as “Best Business Team” at the 2019 American Lawyer Industry Awards, and Caplan was named the North American Operations Executive of the Year by the 2018 Best in Biz Awards.

Financial Times also honored Caplan in 2016, awarding him top prize in the Redesigning the Service Model category for the firm’s unique approach to bringing value to its client relationships.

Earlier this week, for my Litera.TV show Law Insights, I sat down with Caplan to learn more about his background and his approach to leading the business and operations side of a global law firm. Here is our conversation.
